Prepare well. Then put down the phone.

Confess. is a Catholic confession and prayer companion built around a single belief: that what happens between you and God should not also be happening between you and an analytics dashboard.

Why we made this

Most apps in this category either ask for an account, sync to the cloud, or quietly hand a record of your spiritual life to an SDK that funds the rest of their business. None of that is necessary to help a Catholic prepare for confession.

We wanted an examination of conscience that lived on the phone, not on a server. We wanted the Ignatian examen close to hand for the end of every day. We wanted a script for the moment in the confessional when the words go missing. And we wanted all of it to disappear — auto-deletable, key-bound to the device, recoverable by no one, including us.

How it's made

Confess. is built with native Apple frameworks — Swift, SwiftUI, CryptoKit, and Keychain Services. There are no third-party SDKs. No analytics, no crash reporters, no advertising libraries, no remote configuration services. The whole app ships as a single iOS binary.

Encryption is AES-256-GCM. The 256-bit key is generated on-device, stored in the iOS Keychain with the strictest accessibility class (kSecAttrAccessibleWhenUnlockedThisDeviceOnly), and never transmitted. If the key is lost, the data cannot be recovered. That is by design, and the trade-off is honest: we cannot reset your data because we cannot reach it.

The app makes exactly two read-only network calls — to a Catholic readings API and an open-source prayer library — both serving static JSON. Nothing about you is sent in either request.

Editorial principles

The examination of conscience is grounded in the Ten Commandments and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Citations point to the Catechism by paragraph number where appropriate. The Pre-Confession flow follows the Rite of Penance. The Act of Contrition is offered in both traditional and modern forms. Severity hints distinguish what the Church teaches as mortal vs. venial without making the user sort it out alone.

We do not make theological claims the Church does not make. Where Church teaching admits nuance — conditions for mortal sin, scrupulosity, the seal of confession — we point to the source rather than reduce it to an opinion.

What we don't do

No accounts. No email collection. No cloud sync. No subscription tier. No ads. No analytics. No "anonymized" telemetry. No A/B testing. No remote configuration. No device fingerprinting. No social features. No streaks, badges, or scores. The app cannot read what you wrote in your journal. Neither can we.

Who "we" is

Confess. is built and maintained by a small team. We don't put names on the marketing site because the app isn't about us — and because contact addresses tend to attract the wrong kind of mail. For questions or pastoral feedback, email support@confess-app.com.
