How do I reset my PIN?
If you've forgotten your PIN, the app provides a limited number of attempts before locking. After 10 failed PIN entries, the app will either permanently lock or wipe its data, depending on your configuration. This is a security measure to protect your encrypted content.
Because encryption keys are bound to your device's Keychain, there is no way to recover data after a lockout. This is by design — it means no one else can access your data either.
Can I recover my data on a new phone?
No. Your encryption key is stored in the iOS Keychain with device-only access. It is not included in iCloud or iTunes backups and cannot be transferred to another device.
If you get a new phone, you will start fresh. This is intentional — it ensures that your examination responses and journal entries can never be accessed by anyone other than you, on this device.
Does the app use the internet?
The app makes two small, read-only network calls:
- Fetching today's Gospel reading reference from a Catholic readings API
- Fetching prayer text from an open-source prayer library
No user data is sent in either request. The app has no accounts, no cloud sync, and no analytics. If you're offline, liturgical content simply won't update — everything else works normally.
How do I delete my data?
You have several options:
- Auto-delete — examination session summaries are automatically deleted after your configured timer (2 to 72 hours).
- Manual clear — go to Settings → Your Data to clear examination history or your confession list.
- Journal entries — individual entries can be deleted from their detail view.
- Uninstall — removing the app destroys all encrypted files and the Keychain entry, permanently erasing all data.
What examination modes are available?
Quick (2–4 minutes) — a focused subset of questions for regular self-reflection.
Deep (10–20 minutes) — a thorough examination covering all Ten Commandments with detailed questions.
Pre-Confession — a guided six-step flow that includes an opening prayer, preparation guidance, the examination, a review of your responses, the Act of Contrition, and a final "You're Ready" screen before entering the confessional.
Is my data backed up to iCloud?
No. The encryption key is stored in the iOS Keychain with the kSecAttrAccessibleWhenUnlockedThisDeviceOnly attribute, which explicitly excludes it from all backups. Even if app files were somehow backed up, they would be unreadable without the key.
What is the "Over Time" feature?
"Over Time" shows gentle, pastoral observations about recurring areas in your examinations — for example, noticing that a particular commandment area comes up often. It appears after five completed examinations and must be explicitly enabled.
It stores only commandment-level category data (never specific questions, sins, or counts), all encrypted. No numbers, percentages, streaks, or scores are shown. You can clear this data at any time from Settings.
Does the app work offline?
Yes. The examination of conscience, journal, examen prayer, prayer library, confession guide, and all other core features work entirely offline. Only the daily Gospel reading and occasional prayer content updates require a network connection.
